What do you get when you try?
Another year of wondering why.
We live our lives we die in bloom
Rotting through the afternoon.
Chorus
Spread my ashes out across the sea.
Like grains of sand along the beach.
Always gone when you appear.
Engulfed in the same undying cheer.
Where was the cold when I burned the sun?
Frozen in time when the rain weighed a ton.
If truth were known in all the lies.
Laughter is heard in all the cries.
Chorus
Another one gone another one down.
Everything’s changing and moving around.
Only follow when you cannot lead
Toward the cliffs at maximum speed.
Chorus
What do you get when you try?
Another year of wondering why.
We live our lives we die in bloom
Rotting through the afternoon.
Chorus
Where do you get your ‘happy ever after’?
As we get older we die faster.
The hopeless think that we can’t heal.
Never believe your life is real.
Chorus
Forever condemned to their mistakes.
Cloaked in oblivion, I’ll be awake!
Whatever, whenever nothing exists.
With instinct forgotten, nothing is missed.
Chorus
Ah!

This is another song from the back catalog. This was the third song on side A of my first 1997 cassette tape.
I would sometimes record the music without having finished writing the lyrics so I often didn’t have enough words to fill every verse of the outline. Most of the time I would just repeat a verse or two that I really liked–and I do that here–but I also originally just left a verse blank. No real reason, I just left out verse three.
However, in this version I re-recorded all the vocals and added a third verse. I mixed the original tapes into Ableton without the vocal. Most importantly, I labeled all the old tapes properly. Past K was not kind to future K when labeling and organizing the original cassettes the first time around. The next future K will be pleased if he ever needs to revisit the cassettes again.
For the record I do NOT want my ashes spread across the sea. I will be dead so I won’t care what happens but, given a choice, I would much rather be put on a mountain or in a forest. The song is more about being lonely and sad than anything else. 😸 Other than that, this is a 20 year old spouting his own type of philosophical drivel. It’s fun and quirky to me today, nearly 30 years later.
But what does the title mean?! When I was working on this song I called it by it’s tempo because the lyrics weren’t finished–there were other versions of it with different tempos. I think I sped the tape up before I recorded the vocals so it might be closer to 170 or 180 (or 85 to 90-ish BPM if you cut it in half). I never bothered to rename it. 🕺
How do you play it?
Intro/bridge/Coda:
I think it was this…
———-
———-
———-
———-
—-13—
—-11—-
-0——–
Verse:
D5***|C5**G5|F5***| riff
The riff is just touch harmonics here:
——————
——————
——————-
-h5-h5————
———h5——-
————-h5—
——————
The verse also contains some very, very tasty bass.
——————————-
——————————-
-Will tab out when I have time-
——————————
Chorus:
D*E*|Bb***|
This is how I would play it today if I were inclined to do so, It might not be 100% accurate with the recording. I’ve always been fond of this one. I like it’s simplicity and ferocity.
