Three Pieces for String Trio, Movement II

SHEET MUSIC!

Early on in grad school I had the opportunity to have a readthrough with a string trio so I wrote furiously to have this ready but I used an cheap program that wasn’t very agile and didn’t print the different parts very well (maybe not at all, I don’t remember). So I bought Finale (one of the top two programs at the time but now gone😒) and transcribed only the second movement. I still have hard copies of the other two and will hopefully transcribe them someday to make neat clean files. Time will tell. Also, I may have snatched some ideas from an earlier string quartet to make the trio. I won’t know 100% until I find the time to go over the paper copies.

This was composed sometime around 2005 and is a mediocre piece at best. It is another example of me exploring instrumentation. I was tossing around the melody to all the instruments and trying to get as much orchestration experience from it as I could. I could tell the good stuff from the bad while watching and listening to the readthrough. It was clearly evident when when the players liked a melodies or not. 🀣

My biggest complaint with the MIDI playback is it makes the fast bits kind of muddy and murky. Maybe someday I will find time to re-write this but I doubt it. I’m deeply grateful for the learning experience and the performers who struggled through sightreading the piece.
