In the summer of 1997 I finished my first cassette. The re-release is called Volume 1, 1997. I was working on recording a huge group of song ideas on a four-track machine and selected songs for each album. By the time I finished that first album, the second was already completely outlined. The second album was called Out of Time Out of Tune (OOTOOT) with the project name at the time remaining as “Lewd Blue.” It is now being really as “In the Key of K.”

I finished OOTOOT early in 1998 and started work on what would be the third volume I’m calling Open the Door for now. I never finished Open the Door–I have outlines of enough material to finish it but that is for another day (it will be recording more than half of it from scratch but will come some day).

The original album title comes from having fun while singing poorly and my love of time changes. Out of Time Out of Tune is a phrase that perfectly describes my life at the time. I was writing, practicing, and recording with a sense of urgency like I was out of time. 🤷‍♂️ It felt like there was a ton of quiet pressure to ‘get your life together.’ Get a real job, etc. Really, nothing has changed nearly thirty years later.🤣

Note that Fingerpicking was originally called Nose Picking–seriously horrendous name but at the time I thought it was funny. Also Fucks used to be called ?!%#@. And, lastly, to my shame, I misspelled Pompous on every single copy I made of the original OOTOOT cassettes. 🤣 I was once a runner up for spelling bee in elementary school–it shows how far we can fall from greatness. 😹
